Weekly Quote 12/52

We must unlearn the constellations to see the stars.

-Jack Gilbert

In our society it is all about standards.
One of them is the image of what is seen as beautiful nowadays. All over the internet and magazines this image is shown.
Many people, espacially teenagers and young adults have insecurities and self- doubts about themselves due to those images that are created.
Although our society is more (and more) drawn towards acceptance compared to how it once was some things stayed the same.
Still boys shouldn’t cry and show weakness. Still girls should play with dolls, dress up and show weaknesses. Why?
Girls are suppossed to wear lipstick and act all sweet and innocent. But how to be innocent in a world like this?
Our world is mostly a place of judgement and hate. Hate towards one another and hate towards oneself, created by what others say about us.
It goes like this; you get ten compliments and one hateful comment. You probably only see the one that stands alone because somehow our minds work like that. We don’t believe the good things people tell about us but the judgements.
And often you try to change because someone said that they don’t like it about you. But the fact is … you can’t. It is not possible to change something that is connected to your personality to change in a blink of an eye.
Even if you change maybe because something cruel happened to you but deep down you are still the same.
We have to get rid of the way of thinking that we are only good if we fit into something; may it be a group of people or friends and so on.
Because actually it is more of the other way around.
If we look past all those structures and standards, the people who are not trying to fit into something are those that strike the most. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have friends or something like, it only means that you should not be defined by others.
Be your own person. Be unique.
